Pathology-Dependent Histological Changes of the Left Stellate Ganglia: A Cadaveric Study

Clinical Medicine Insights: Pathology , 2012,
Abstract: Sympathetic hyperinnervation due to nerve sprouting generated by the left stellate ganglion has been noted following cardiopulmonary disease processes. Sympathetic hyperinnervation seems to be limited to cardiopulmonary diseases in the experimental and clinical settings. However, histological changes of the left stellate ganglion following cardiopulmonary diseases in humans have yet to be observed. This study intends to investigate the histological changes of cadaveric sympathetic nervous tissue of left stellate ganglia (n = 32) and their relationship to noted pathology. Our study found fibrotic changes of the left stellate ganglion are not significantly dependent upon pathological processes, however, changes in the number of nerve cell bodies seems to be pathology dependent. A relationship between respiratory (mean = 33.3; P = 0.023) and cardiovascular pathologies (mean = 29.6; P = 0.199) and an increase in nerve cell bodies of the left stellate ganglion was noted when compared to other pathologies (mean = 25.7). The link between cardiopulmonary disease and sympathetic hyperinnervation may be the increase in the number of nerve cell bodies of the left stellate ganglion. Our results are clinically significant considering sympathetic hyperinnervation is associated with arrythmogenesis and an increase in morbidity and mortality in patients with pulmonary disease. Such findings may warrant investigation into the use of ganglion blockade in cardiopulmonary diseases.

Voluntary Rein Tension in Horses When Moving Unridden in a Dressage Frame Compared with Ridden Tests of the Same Horses—A Pilot Study
Lara Piccolo
- , 2019, DOI: 10.3390/ani9060321
Abstract: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the maximum rein tension that horses voluntarily adopt when wearing side reins set in dressage frame without a rider, and to compare that to rein tension in dressage frame with a rider. Without a rider, all horses maintained a rein tension force of approximately 1 kg in all gaits. For the same horses with a rider, rein tension force was significantly higher at approximately 3 kg on each side to maintain the dressage frame. Understanding and lowering the peak forces acting on the mouth of the horse could enhance equine welfare in daily riding practice
Is the Lending Decision-Making Process Affected by Behavioral Biases?
—Evidence from Southern Italy

Modern Economy (ME) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/me.2018.91010
Abstract: The objective of this article was to verify whether, in the decision-making process concerning bank loans issuance, managers have been influenced or not by how they perceive some personal characteristics of the applicant, even if these characteristics have nothing to do with the financial aspects typically analyzed to determine creditworthiness. In particular, we analyzed the impact of gender, age, beauty, race and education of the borrower on the probability to be funded. The study was conducted submitting face-to-face questionnaires to 212 officers working in the credit chain of 25 banks and data have been analyzed using the logistic regression model. The chosen setting was the south of Italy and in particular of the Campania region. The results show that there has been some influence of bias regarding gender, age and beauty, while no significant relationship has been found with reference to the racial discrimination or to the cultural level of the applicant. These results, which confirm the evidence already found in other settings by previous empirical analyses, would lead to highlight that there is an adverse selection mechanism in the provision of banks' credit capital.
Cross-Country Differences in How Behavioral Biases Affect Decision-Making in the Bank Industry: Evidence from Italy and Serbia  [PDF]

Abstract: Since non-performing loans, despite the implementation of the Basel accords, which should have improved creditworthiness estimation, are strongly affecting European banks’ liquidity and stability, there could be a behavioral bias behind banks misallocation of capital. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether behavioral biases affect credit allocation in different ways in different countries. Particularly, we investigated how certain characteristics of the applicants, such as race, age, gender and education, affect bank officers’ decision-making process. The study was conducted submitting face-to-face questionnaires to 299 officers, 212 in Italy and 87 in Serbia, working in the credit chain. Running a Mann-Whitney U test on the mentioned two independent samples, result show that Italian officers are more influenced by behavioral biases than their Serbian colleagues when they have to decide whether or not to approve a loan application.
Hyphomycetes decompositores 4: espécies associadas às raízes de Ctenanthe oppenheimiana Sond
Grandi, Rosely Ana Piccolo;
Acta Botanica Brasilica , 1991, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33061991000100002
Abstract: decomposing roots of ctenanthe oppenheimiana sond. (marantaceae) were collected from january of 1986 to december of 1987 in the se??o de ornamentais of instituto de botanica, s?o paulo state, brazil. the roots were prepared by washing technique with destiled water and observed for hyphomycetes decomposing fungi, the following taxa were found: acremonium sp., dictyochaeta fertilis hughes & kendrick, humicola grisea traaen, phialocephala fusca kendrick, pithomyces chartarum berk. & curt.) m. b. ellis, rhinocladiella phaeophora veerkamp & w. gams, sporidesmiella hyalosperma (corda) p. m. kirk var. hyalosperma p. m. kirk, and tetraploa aristata berkeley & broome. phialocephala fusca is mentioned for the first time in brazil.
Educa??o infantil: análise da manifesta??o social do preconceito na atividade principal de jogos
Piccolo, Gustavo Martins;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302011000100013
Abstract: this paper is a synthesis of the author's master thesis, which discusses the process of appropriation, development and critics of the manifestations of prejudice by preschoolers in the practice of their main activity. it is oriented by assumptions of historical materialism, according to vygotsky's historical-cultural perspective. data were collected in a public preschool. results point out the existence of manifestations of prejudice related to the categories gender, race and beauty. they also highlight the importance of teacher's mediation to contest such attitudes and understand differences as the historical expression of the humanity contained in the most diverse cultures, societies and human beings rather than inequalities.
Memórias, histórias e representa??es sociais do bairro de Vila Isabel e de uma de suas favelas (RJ, Brasil)
Piccolo,Fernanda Delvalhas;
Etnográfica , 2009,
Abstract: based on an ethnography carried out in a community center in morro dos macacos, located in bairro de vila isabel, a district in the northern section of rio de janeiro city (brazil), the present article is about the history and memories of that slum and neighborhood. it examines some events that reinforce its official history and memory or emphasize other stories and memories, different or alike. those events are interesting symbolical expressions of individuals and groups, for they give visibility to social networks, since they reinforce a sense of belonging to a group and create social links. they are also important for contributing to create stories and memories - official and unofficial - that build social identities and representations that guide its inhabitants? practices.
